The Age Cage

Like any other parent who is gearing up for sending his / her child out to play group or a pre-school for the first time, I also get nervous thinking about this. Apart from WHICH SCHOOL or PLAY to select for the child, a major query remains WHEN TO PUT THE CHILD! What exactly is the correct age for our kid to join a play group or a  pre-school.

I saw a TV Program on the same that was trying to address the issues / loopholes that our Indian Education System has and it inspired me to write about this. But here, on my post, I do not want to sound politically correct or incorrect, rather my concerns are plainly and completely as a parent of a toddler.

My son is 21 months old and like other children of his generation, excellent in outsmarting us too. But, does that learning or high catching ability makes him eligible for an environment which is out of the comfort zone of his cozy home and his mother! I will comment on this later in the post.
A lot of my friends who have children of similar ages are also concerned about the "correct age" of putting their kids in a school environment may be because nobody wants their child to be left behind in this HIGHLY COMPETITIVE world!

High Competition

Well, before I talk about the age factor, I have a few things to say about the so called COMPETITION today. Why is there so much fuss about it? Isn't it that we had also faced competition in our times, the 80's or the 90's? Yes indeed it was there, but the only difference was that it helped in our development as it was healthy. As we advanced, our expectations shot up and we are the ones who converted this HEALTHY COMPETITION to a CUT - THROAT COMPETITION today! And now we are transferring the burden of being highly competitive to our own little children without realizing the outcomes.

A child is a child, no matter the times!

Be it 80's or 2000's, a child is the same in thinking, learning, eating, and behaving! Just because he /s he learns according to the surroundings, does not makes eligible to be pushed to grow up fast. We learnt according to our surroundings and exposure to stuff and technology and these children today are doing the same. Working on laptops and mobiles is a big thing for us because we learnt them later in life but for these children today, it is like learning with their surroundings hence not a very big deal.

Coming back to the point of age, I personally feel that a child must be mentally as well as physically ready to be out of the comforts of home. I see most of the parents eagerly searching the best play or pre - schools for their children because they are soon turning three or are already three! But seriously, Three!!! even when the proper school education starts at six!!
Do we really feel this age is strong enough to handle the pressure of learning books, poems, tables etc. and also be safe in today's not so safe environment? I hope you must be understanding what I mean from my safety point!

Why do we have to push our children to be a part of the rat race at such a fragile age where they can't even walk properly! Why can't we let them grow up at their own pace and give them a sound and learning environment at home? It is not that tough. Mothers are said to be the first teachers, then lets be one! Our role does not concludes on Sleep Training, Potty Training or Eating Training; it is much more than that. Rather than just pushing our kid towards only reading books and learning ABCD, Animal Names, 1234 and what not, why not give them basic life learning of Right & Wrong, Good & Bad, Love & Help, Value of Relations, Friends, Trust, Taking them out to meet new people and make new friends and just play and grow up slowly.

As a mother, I also want my child to be a learned child and an all-rounder but without any strings attached or any pressure on him. And moreover, every parent knows the capacity and capability of their child and should act accordingly but should not be putting an invisible burden over their little and fragile shoulders which are supposed to be carefree, at least in this age. Provide them a healthy and educative smart environment at home for their overall development and for this, both the father and the mother have to take part in.

We really need to re-think on our ways that make us blindly follow the rat race going on and make our children over burdened.

It is not that the concept of play or pre-school is bad, but we have to choose what is best for our child and when. Let us take the charge of our child's future and not let the competition be the decision maker.

Recipes That Make Me Drool

Hello foodies,

This post is one of the kinds that all food lovers would really enjoy going through. I am a food lover myself, and hence thought of compiling a list of few of my favorite dishes that really make me drool at any given point of time! Check them out.

Delicious Starters

SHAAMI KEBABS

Being a complete non vegetarian, the shaami kebabs get the first rank on my list. The way my mother makes them, they literally melt in mouth. Surprising thing, she doesn't have to use any fancy ingredient to make them soft, smooth and deliciously inviting to the eye and the palette.

Made of keema boiled along with chana daal, onions and garlic, black peppercorns and then ground to a smooth paste on a stone Sil Batta (for the rustic flavour); mixed with chopped onions, finely chopped ginger, green chillies, mint / coriander leaves. Make kebabs on the palm like tikkis and fry them on a griddle with very little oil and they are ready to be served with either mint chutney or tomato ketchup. Yummy..

DAHI BHALLA

It is one of the dishes that I always have space for. Made of Urad and little bit moong daal paste, deep fried balls, dipped in Heeng and Salt water right after deep frying. Covered in snow like smooth curd, sprinkled with salt, red chilli powder and roasted cumin powder with colorful green khatti chutney and dark brown imli chutney. Absolutely Balle Balle!

The Main Hunger Busters

ARHAR DAAL & ZEERA RICE

Seeing the temperatures rising, Arhar Daal & Zeera Rice are always on my mind for a filling as well as light afternoon meal. Easy and quick to make and light on the stomach, it is a delicious lunch recipe.

Arhar daal boiled with Salt, Red Chilli and Turmeric on one side and on the other hand, a little gravy like tadka prepared with sliced onions, crushed garlic cloves, cumin and chopped tomatoes for the daal.

CHHOLE BHATURE

An outstanding North Indian dish that is one of my all time favorite grabs for hunger. Chickpeas cooked in various Indian spices and spicy onion tomato gravy served garnished with fresh coriander, ginger julienne, & sliced green chillies. The Bhature are nothing but a deep fried bread made of refined flour and curd dough. Irresistable.

BIRYANI

Biryani is one dish whose aroma is also capable of making me hungry all over again. This spicy, yummy rice dish cooked with chicken or mutton along with exotic spices like Nutmeg, Mace, black peppercorns, cinnamon, cardamom, etc along with spicy gravy, finished with fried onions, served with curd raita is a complete stunner!

KEEMA KARELE

Reading Karele (Bitterguard) must have put many off but trust me, after you would have it once, you would want it more! There is not even a tinge of bitterness that you could taste. I too used to run away even by the name of karele, but after trying it out once, I am a huge fan now.

Keema cooked in spices and gravy first and then equal quantity of karele and onions added to it and cooked for a little more time. This dish is such a hit on my favorite dishes list, that I just can't ignore it at all!

BAJRE KI KHICHDI

Another rural dish with its own rustic / ethnic charm that is always capable of pulling me towards it. Basically a dish of Rajasthan, it is one of the best foods in winters to keep you warm and safe from the cold.

Made of Bajra and Chaule ki daal, soaked and crushed in a mortar pestle, boiled with just salt over a choolha to impart that rustic wooden flavor and served with Til (Sesame) Oil or Ghee.

Sweet Relishes

ZARDA

Zarda is an authentic muslim dessert made of rice and loads of dry fruits. Yellow in color, garnished with cherries, dry fruits and grated coconut, it looks nothing less then a mesmerizing and inviting platter. Happy indulging!

This is all for my recipe list... Bon Appetite!!!

"Lefties" & "The Rest"

Such an interesting topic to talk about, isn't it! Ages long debate over the HANDEDNESS of a child... Right or Left. Well, this topic suddenly cropped up in my mind as I came across an article one day in a newspaper. As interested as any left handed would be to read about his / her handedness, I read through the whole article word to word... but alas, I wish the topic would have addressed the issues more specifically and in a more elaborate manner rather than being a very general one. But never the less, good to see something about the Left Handed Ones!

Oh, well by the way.. I am a left handed person and I love being one...

You must be thinking Ah, what is the big deal in being a left handed! It's the same as someone being a right handed! So, the answer is NO, not really!! Being a lefty is not same as someone being a Right handed! It is different and at times AN ISSUE! Let me clear it more ... Read on

See around you, if you are not a lefty, you will find nothing complaining about! Rather, everything will be perfect in your eyes... but now... look from the angle of a left handed... you will find a totally opposite world. There is almost EVERYTHING we left handed people have to get adjusted to because this world has a majority of right handed persons and hence the left handed are nearly LEFT OUT / neglected in terms of ergonomics. From smudging the ink pen written text in our notebooks to struggling with a PC Mouse position and cable ... We have dealt it all.....

Lets start from our "NO NO Use your right hand" Families!

I am sure almost every lefty reading this would agree with the above statement! As the child starts using his left hand prominently for doing the tasks, there is definitely someone or the other really pushing the child to use his / her right hand for the tasks. I was lucky enough to have encouraging parents to let me remain naturally selected as a left handed. But most of the people go through the ordeal... I am sure lefties would agree that at some or the other point of time, we all have had that one person who used to be after our lives for using left hand for maximum tasks rather than the customary right one! This pressure is definitely annoying and is mentally disturbing too.... The HANDEDNESS is not a child's choice, it is a natural selection... and that is exactly how a person's body and mind are developed. To quote some science here, I am sure we all have read about the controlling brain sides like left controls the right handed and right controls the left handed...

Trouble Seating Double

Unless we used to be seated on the left side of  the desk or the other kid (our bench partner in school) was also a lefty, we have had our share of "Elbow Fights" making the handwriting not so legitimate! Remember how difficult it used to be seated with the "not ready to change his / her seating side kid!"

Even then, schools are still better, trouble actually starts at colleges / universities where we had to sit on single chairs with the writing boards attached to them and all on the RIGHT SIDE! That's such a pain....

While I was in College, during examinations, my main concern used to be earlier than the other left handed pupils of my class and grab THE LEFT HANDED CHAIR (yes the college had only a few chairs for the lefties but that was of course a rare find and your luck!!) on first come first serve basis!

Gadgets Use

Before the mobile phones, it was about using the PC Mouse... such a trouble it used to be bringing it all the way from right side to left and then realizing that the cable is just not enough for it to change side... duh! Remember the struggle! And then came mobile phones.. I really struggled with locking and using mobiles specially in crowded / jammed places as the functions were suited towards the right hand side ...

The NOW Scenario

The article that I went through claims that now companies are looking towards Left handed section of population and developing products that are suited for them as well.. just to quote an example the triangular pencils that are suited for both the hands... and many more..

Though, in India, apart from the writing chairs in colleges, I have still not come across anything in particular that is specifically developed for the left handed people. Even the cover laid at a restaurant table (all that cutlery and glassware) is suited for the right handed! (Yes, we know that we should eat with our right hand but its just not simple and very easy giving the holding position to our right hand..)

Talk About POSITIVES :D

In spite of all these difficulties and day to day challenges and struggles with products, devices or systems, if so, there are numerous positives of being a left handed too... people around you immediately NOTICE that you write with your LEFT HAND and they ask! and come on.. lets agree to this...we feel noticed... isn't it a feeling of being a little different from the rest... of course in good sense :)

Also, left handed are generally called very intelligent / creative and achievers.... I am pretty creative and quiet intelligent in academics (not bragging, just thanking god for this). Hearing this from other's of course feels good..

Thirdly, lefties are known to have beautiful handwriting and as far as I know, whichever lefty I had met, had a beautiful writing for sure...

So, concluding, there is a struggling yet exciting life being a left handed!

Do not forget to post your opinion on this ...
